About DCAT

A major strategic aim of the University of Dundee is to develop future leaders of bioscience and health research.  In line with this, the Dundee Clinical Academic Track (DCAT) aims to develop, administer and coordinate research opportunities for trainee health professionals, bridging gaps between different Schools and Colleges in order to capitalise on research and educational strengths within the institution. 

DCAT has something for everyone! Often it is difficult to understand and/ or to access the opportunities available in the field of clinical research through the various stages of medical training.  The Dundee Clinical Academic Track aims to provide a resource for undergraduate and postgraduate clinicians with an interest in clinical research, to enable them to engage in clinical academic work at all stages of the training pathway, from entry into medical school, to consultants. 

From the very beginning of their University career, medical students can access academic medicine in the form of Vacation Studentships, SSCs in Research Practice, or through the completion of a BMSc.  Early exposure to research can give valuable insight into whether a clinical academic career might be an appropiate choice.  Research programmes are available for junior doctors in Dundee, working for NHS Tayside as well, in the form of both the Dundee Academic Foundation Programme for foundation year doctors and the Scottish Clinical Research Excellence Development Scheme (SCREDS) for those already specialising, whilst more senior doctors can participate in intermediate and senior fellowship schemes. 

In addition to highlighting the research opportunities available in Dundee, DCAT offers advice on how to develop a clinical academic career and is able to provide guidance on funding/ fellowships available to clinical researchers outwith Dundee.

DCAT provides a resource for undergraduate and postgraduate clinicians with an interest in clinical academic careers. Our aims are:

- To coordinate research opportunities for medical students

- To provide information and administrative support for research to junior doctors in training

- To develop mentoring programmes for health professionals during periods of research training

- To facilitate administration and delivery of generic skills components

- To provide individualised advice regarding re-entry into clinical training following periods of research

- To maximise links with NHS Education for Scotland
